Why Seoul?

Seoul, the heart of South Korea, never fails to enchant its visitors. It’s a place where ancient traditions coexist with modern innovations, resulting in a unique blend of old and new. This vibrant city provides a wide range of experiences, making it a must-see destination for visitors.

Seoul’s rich history is one of the reasons to visit. The city is home to five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, each of which tells a different story about the city’s history. One of these sites, Changdeokgung Palace, was one of my first visits. I felt like I had traveled back in time as I walked through its secret garden. The serenity of the garden, set against the bustling city, was a surreal experience.

Another reason to visit Seoul is its vibrant culture. K-pop, Korean dramas, and Korean cuisine are all popular in the city. I remember my first experience with the city’s street food scene. The tantalizing aroma of tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and the sizzling sound of gimbap (seaweed rice rolls) being prepared right in front of me were a sensory overload.

Another draw is the city’s nightlife. Seoul comes alive as the sun sets, from lively night markets to rooftop bars with panoramic views of the city. A night spent in Hongdae, a neighborhood known for its youthful energy and indie music scene, is one of my favorite memories. The upbeat atmosphere, complete with music and laughter, was contagious.

Finally, Seoul’s friendly and welcoming people make the city truly unique. Their hospitality and friendliness add to the city’s charm. I’ve had numerous conversations with locals, each of which has given me a new perspective and a better understanding of their culture.

The Best Time to Visit Seoul

The best time to visit Seoul depends on what you want to see and do. The city has a distinct charm in each season, with its own set of attractions.

The months of April to June are ideal for visiting Seoul. The city comes alive with cherry blossoms, which paint the streets pink and white. I recall my first spring in Seoul, when I was awestruck by the beauty of the cherry blossoms as I strolled through Yeouido Park. During this time, the Yeouido Spring Flower Festival is a sight to behold.

Summer in Seoul is hot and humid from July to August, but it is also the season of vibrant festivals. The Seoul Summer Festival, with music, dance, and food stalls lining the streets, is a highlight. During this festival, one of my most memorable experiences was joining the locals in a traditional circle dance, or “ganggangsullae.”

Autumn, which lasts from September to November, is another excellent time to visit Seoul. The weather is nice, and the city is decked out in vibrant fall colors. Hiking up Mount Namsan in the fall foliage is an unforgettable experience.

Winter, from December to February, is cold, with snowfall on occasion. However, if you enjoy winter sports, this is the best time to visit. I recall my trip to Pyeongchang, the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics, for a thrilling day of skiing.

The shoulder seasons — late spring (late April to June) and early autumn (September to early November) — are ideal for avoiding tourist crowds. The weather is pleasant, and the city is less congested.

There is never a bad time to visit Seoul. Each season provides a distinct experience, and the best time to visit is determined by your preferences and interests.

Getting Around Seoul

Navigating Seoul is a breeze, thanks to its efficient and extensive public transportation system. The city boasts a world-class subway system, a network of buses, and plenty of taxis, making it easy to get around.

The Seoul Metropolitan Subway is the backbone of the city’s public transportation. With nine lines crisscrossing the city and surrounding areas, the subway can get you almost anywhere you need to go. It’s clean, efficient, and punctual, with trains running every few minutes.

Buses in Seoul are another great way to get around. There are four types of buses: blue, green, red, and yellow, each serving different routes and areas of the city. I remember trying to decipher the color-coded system. It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but you will get the hang of it.

Taxis are plentiful in Seoul and relatively affordable. They’re a convenient option, especially late at night. One tip I’ve learned is to have your destination written in Korean, as not all taxi drivers speak English. I use Microsoft Translator on my iPhone for this.

Another option is to rent a bike through the city’s public bike rental system, Ttareungi. It’s a great way to explore the city at your own pace.

Don’t forget to get a T-money card. It’s a rechargeable transportation card that you can use on the subway, buses, and taxis. It’s convenient and offers discounts on fares.

Seoul, a city where the past meets the future, is brimming with attractions that cater to all kinds of travelers. Its landscape is dotted with historical sites that tell tales of its rich past and modern marvels that showcase its leap into the future.

Gyeongbokgung Palace, the grandest of Seoul’s five royal palaces, is a must-visit. Walking through its vast grounds, I was transported back to the Joseon Dynasty. The changing of the guard ceremony, a colorful spectacle, is something you shouldn’t miss.

Next, make your way to Bukchon Hanok Village. Nestled between two palaces, this traditional village with its beautifully preserved hanok houses offers a glimpse into the city’s past. I spent a delightful afternoon here, wandering through its narrow alleys and sipping traditional tea in a hanok teahouse.

Hidden Gems in Seoul

Beyond Seoul’s well-trodden paths, there are hidden gems waiting to be discovered. These lesser-known locations provide one-of-a-kind experiences and a different perspective on the city.

Ikseon-dong is one such location. This neighborhood, tucked away in the heart of the city, is a delightful mix of old and new. Hanoks, or traditional Korean houses, have been transformed into hip cafes, boutiques, and galleries. I remember coming across a charming tea shop here and spending an afternoon sipping traditional Korean tea.

Another hidden treasure in Seoul is its poetry wall. Walls adorned with beautiful Korean poems can be found throughout the city. The Ihwa Mural Village, for example, has a poem wall that is popular with both locals and tourists. It’s a peaceful spot to take a break and appreciate the beauty of Korean literature.

Once an oil depot, the Oil Tank Culture Park is now a cultural complex that hosts a variety of events and exhibitions. Its transformation demonstrates Seoul’s commitment to repurposing and revitalizing its public spaces. The park’s six massive oil tanks, each with its own distinct purpose, are a sight to behold.

Seonyudo Park, located on an island in the Han River, is a former water treatment plant that has been transformed into an ecological park. It’s a tranquil haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It was a one-of-a-kind experience to walk along its trails, which were surrounded by lush greenery and remnants of the old plant.

Seoullo 7017, a former overpass converted into a sky garden, provides breathtaking views of the city. Walking through this elevated park with the cityscape as a backdrop is a one-of-a-kind urban experience.

These Seoul hidden gems provide one-of-a-kind experiences and a glimpse into the city’s innovative spirit. They demonstrate Seoul’s ability to blend the old and the new, tradition and innovation, and nature and urbanity.

Food in Seoul

Seoul’s food scene is a gastronomic adventure for all tastes. From street food stalls to high-end restaurants, the city’s rich and diverse food culture offers a culinary journey.

Seoul’s street food is a must-try. The bustling Gwangjang Market, one of Seoul’s oldest traditional markets, is a foodie’s dream. It was love at first bite for me when I had my first taste of bindaetteok, a savory mung bean pancake, here.

Tosokchon Samgyetang is a must-see for a traditional Korean dining experience. This restaurant, famous for its ginseng chicken soup, or samgyetang, offers a taste of authentic Korean cuisine. The soup’s soothing warmth, combined with the subtle flavors of ginseng and chicken, was a culinary delight.

In Seoul, modern Korean cuisine is also making waves. The Michelin-starred Mingles restaurant is at the forefront of this culinary revolution. Their menu, which combines traditional Korean ingredients with modern cooking techniques, provides a one-of-a-kind dining experience. The Jang Trio, a dish made up of three different fermented sauces, was a standout.

Sanchon, located in the traditional neighborhood of Insadong, is another memorable restaurant. This restaurant serves temple cuisine, a type of vegetarian cuisine based on Buddhist principles, and was founded by a former Buddhist monk. Dining in this serene setting was both a spiritual and culinary journey.

Finally, Mapo Sutbul Galbi in Mapo-gu offers a taste of Korea’s famous barbecue. A carnivore’s dream is their grilled beef ribs, marinated in a sweet and savory sauce.

In essence, Seoul’s food scene is a sensory overload. It’s a city where food is more than just a source of nutrition; it’s also an important part of its culture and identity.

The Bar Scene in Seoul

The bar scene in Seoul is as diverse and vibrant as the city itself. The city’s bar scene offers a variety of experiences, ranging from traditional Korean bars serving local drinks to modern cocktail lounges.

Traditional Korean drinks are a highlight of the nightlife in Seoul. Makgeolli, a milky rice wine, and soju, a clear distilled liquor, are two Korean bar staples. My first experience with makgeolli was at a traditional Korean bar in Insadong. It was a delightful introduction to Korean drinking culture, served in a kettle with a side of pajeon, a savory pancake.

Charles H., located in the basement of the Four Seasons Hotel, is a must-visit for an upscale drinking experience. This speakeasy-style bar, named after cocktail legend Charles H. Baker, serves an inventive cocktail menu. The “Seoul Side,” a cocktail inspired by the city, left an indelible mark.

Le Chamber, a secret bar hidden behind a bookshelf in Cheongdam-dong, is another memorable bar. As one of the world’s top 50 bars, it has an extensive cocktail menu. The bartenders’ magic show, a unique feature of the bar, enhanced the overall experience.

Magpie Brewing Co. in Itaewon offers a taste of Korea’s craft beer scene. This local brewery serves a variety of craft beers, ranging from pale ales to stouts. The “Magpie Pale Ale,” with its well-balanced flavors, stood out.

Finally, Sool Gallery offers a one-of-a-kind drinking experience. It’s a traditional Korean bar that serves artisan soju and makgeolli tastings. The guided tasting, which was paired with traditional Korean snacks, was both educational and enjoyable.

Seoul’s nightlife is a vibrant spectacle, with a wide range of experiences to suit all tastes. After sundown, the city’s vibrant spirit comes alive with a variety of entertainment options, ranging from pulsing clubs and lively night markets to cultural performances and sporting events.

Seoul’s club scene is well known around the world. The epicenters of this vibrant nightlife are Itaewon, Hongdae, and Gangnam. Club Octagon in Gangnam, known as one of the top clubs in the world, is known for its cutting-edge sound system and electrifying atmosphere, making it a haven for electronic music fans.

The Jeongdong Theater offers traditional Korean performances such as dance, music, and drama to those interested in Korean culture. A highlight is the “Miso” performance, a beautiful rendition of the classic Korean tale “Chunhyang.”

Sporting events also help fuel Seoul’s thriving nightlife. A baseball game at Jamsil Baseball Stadium is more than just a game; it’s a social event that provides a glimpse into Korean culture with lively crowds and enthusiastic cheering.

Seoul’s night markets offer a one-of-a-kind shopping and dining experience. The Dongdaemun Night Market, which is open until the early hours of the morning, is a fashionista’s dream. The Namdaemun Market, on the other hand, sells a wide range of goods, from clothing and accessories to homeware and toys.

The Gwangjang Night Market is a must-see for foodies. A sensory feast is created by sizzling sounds, tantalizing aromas, and vendors preparing food right in front of patrons. Popular dishes include bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) and mayak gimbap (addictive seaweed rice rolls).
