Savoring Memphis: A Quick Trip Through the City’s Best

Downtown Memphis

Memphis, Tennessee, is a city that sings a soulful tune of history, music, and a culinary scene that’s a food lover’s paradise. My recent business trip to this vibrant city was a whirlwind of meetings, handshakes, and power lunches. Yet it was the food that truly stole the show. This was my Memphis Food Tour, a quick trip through the city’s best BBQ and food spots.

Sunday

Sunday saw my arrival in Memphis, the city of blues and BBQ. An Uber whisked me away from the airport, the cityscape unfolding before my eyes. My first stop on this Memphis Food Tour? Corky’s, a BBQ joint that had been on my radar for years,

Corky’s was a symphony of smoky aromas and the sizzle of grills. The air was thick with anticipation, and the patrons were a mix of locals and tourists, all united by their love for good food. Despite the restaurant being packed, the service was swift and efficient. The staff moved with a practiced ease; their smiles never wavered, and their enthusiasm was infectious.

Monday

Monday evening, however, was a different story. My client, a self-proclaimed Thai food enthusiast, insisted we dine at a local Thai restaurant. Now, I’m no stranger to Thai cuisine, but in Memphis? It was akin to ordering sushi in the Sahara. The food was, in a word, tasteless. The only saving grace?

A quick visit to the Official Home of the Blues, Beale Street, and the music that was rocking at B.B. King’s

My stay in Memphis was made all the more enjoyable by the quirky charm of Caption by Hyatt. The hotel was a delightful blend of comfort and eccentricity, a far cry from the sterile uniformity of a Hyatt Place. The rooms were spacious and well-appointed, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel’s unique design elements added a touch of whimsy to my stay, making each day a little brighter. I found myself hoping for more Caption hotels in the future.

Tuesday

Tuesday morning began with a visit to Big Bad Breakfast off of Poplar. The name was a promise, and the restaurant delivered. The breakfast was hearty, flavorful, and the perfect start to a busy day. The eggs were cooked to perfection, the bacon crispy, and the toast golden and buttery. The biscuits, however, were the star of the show. Flaky and buttery, they were a testament to the simple joy of a well-made biscuit. The homemade jams, a symphony of fruity flavors, were the perfect accompaniment. The coffee, a much-needed jolt of caffeine, was strong and robust.

Later that day, the Germantown Commissary was open (after some sort of drinking water issue for all of Germantown on Monday), and I was ready to dive back into the Memphis food scene. The Commissary was a sensory adventure, from the Big Boss Smoked Sausage and Cheese Plate to the Ribs and Pulled Pork Combo. The Coconut Cream Pie was a dessert so exquisitely crafted that it boldly usurped my dear grandma’s recipe.

Wednesday

Wednesday morning began with a visit to Gibson’s Donuts, a place that has been continually named one of the best donuts in Tennessee. The Plain Glazed Donut was a revelation — soft, flakey, and absolutely perfect. The New Orleans Buttermilk and Maple Bacon Donuts were equally impressive. Gibson’s Donuts was a testament to the simple joy of a well-made donut.

Before catching my flight, I made a final culinary stop at Uncle Lou’s for some Sweet, Spicy Love Fried Chicken. Now, Gus’ in Memphis is famous, but Uncle Lou’s? It was the absolute best. The chicken was perfectly cooked, the skin crispy, and the meat juicy and tender. The sweet and spicy sauce was a flavor explosion and the perfect end to my culinary adventure.

As I made my way to the airport, I couldn’t help but marvel at the newly redone single terminal. Memphis had done a fantastic job of creating an airport that was as welcoming as the city itself.

My Memphis Food Tour was a journey of flavors, a testament to the city’s vibrant culinary scene. From the smoky BBQ to the perfect donuts, each meal was a chapter in a delicious narrative. Memphis, with its rich history and even richer food, had left an indelible mark on my palate. And as I boarded my flight, I knew one thing for sure: I would be back.
